With ScratchJr, young children (ages 5-7) can program their own interactive stories and games. We are looking into using Scratch Jr on Chromebooks, and trying to figure out how to make this work in a school setting. Using Chromebooks, sometimes kids will close the browser tab, or the connection may be lost. We are eagerly awaiting the web version of Scratch 2.0 at my school, where we have only Google Chromebooks. It is available as a free app for iOS, Android and Chromebook.

One question I had was whether the same student has to use the same Chromebook in order to be able to save his/her projects, and go back to them later. ScratchJr is a collaboration between the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company.


By creating projects in ScratchJr, young children can learn to think creatively and reason systematically, despite not being able to read.

I am evaluating Chromebooks for a Scratch course for my school, and I think I will have to test Scratch on Chromebook first hand before deciding.
ScratchJr is a visual programming language designed to introduce programming skills to children ages 5–7.
