In the opening part of Inglourious Basterds Hans Landa asks Monsieur LaPadite if he knows the nickname the French people have bestowed upon him. Being the evil person that he was and knowing the end was coming, he just used the situation in Inglorious Basterds to save himself and make himself look like a hero. Col. Hans Landa allowed Shoshanna to escape because he thought she may not survive the night. So I assume he thought as many others did in that Germany's defeat was getting close.
He did this with no frills or fuss (except for the exciting explanation of the word "bingo") and in an almost friendly manner. The original script of the film had a scene which explained this. Landa was no fool as well. My guess would be that he never planned it, he just saw an opportunity to be more influential to the war than Hitler or Churchil and took it. But, it was deleted in the film considering the runtime. Almost immediately after the murder scene, we see Landa negotiate his conditional surrender to Lt. Raine. So, whenever I watch Inglorious Basterds, I'm struck by this question: Why does Landa kill Bridget von Hammersmark, and why so personally? Moreover, why does he kill her in such a personal manner (manual strangulation)? When LaPadite anxiously reveals that he has heard the term "Jew Hunter", Landa puts him at ease saying he is proud of this nickname "precisely because I have earned it".
