Astley was a horseman with a British dragoon regiment from about 1759 and at first was the sole performer in the Amphitheatre, specializing in At the age of just 17, Philip Astley left his home to join the 15th Light Dragoons, a cavalry regiment newly formed by Colonel (later General) Granville Elliot. A few months later, Astley was chosen by Dominic Angelo, Lord Pembroke’s trainer to be instructed in a new method of riding at Lord Pembroke’s estate near Salisbury. Their troubled relationship led the young Philip to leave home in 1759 and enlist in the Light Horse, serving H.M. 15th Regiment of Light Dragoons, under Colonel Eliott.

At the age of nine, he apprenticed with his father, but Astley's dream was to work with horses, so he joined Colonel Eliott's Fifteenth Light Dragoons when he was 17, later becoming a Sergeant Major. A total of 139 members of the armed forces and 1 civilian have been named in the latest Operational Honours and Awards List.
